The Business and Environment Initiative at Harvard Business School educates, connects, and mobilizes business leaders to address climate change and other environmental challenges.

HBS Initiatives are research-fueled “communities of engagement” where faculty, students, and alumni connect with practitioners in the field to focus on focus on topics that are too complex for any one discipline or industry to solve alone.

For more information, visit: n nThe Director of the Business and Environment Initiative (BEI) partners with the BEI faculty chair and core faculty to develop, refine, and implement a strategy designed to leverage BEI’s intellectual capital, its network, and its executional capabilities.

The Director is responsible for overseeing BEI’s overall strategy and operations, managing a portfolio of program activities that support faculty research and teaching, educational programs within the MBA and Executive Education curriculum, MBA field-based learning and career support programs, and alumni outreach and engagement.

The Director helps to develop communities of practice by linking faculty and practitioners with shared interests, serving as a subject matter expert for the Initiative and as an ambassador for the School.

S/he interfaces with a wide range of constituents including HBS faculty, staff, students, and alumni; Harvard faculty and administrators; leaders in business, government, and the nonprofit sector; academics; and other thought leaders.

nn nnJob-Specific Responsibilitiesnn nn
•Work closely with BEI faculty chair and administrative team to drive and regularly assess BEI’s strategy and optimize its progress to goals.

Provide managerial and intellectual leadership to guide strategic planning efforts.

•Develop and nurture a deep working knowledge of the research and most current thinking relating to climate change and associated risks and opportunities in the finance, energy, food, transportation, and building sectors, as well as environmental sustainability more generally.

•Serve as a subject matter expert and key contact on the work of the Initiative for internal and external constituents, including faculty, administration, and the media.

Play a leadership role in developing relationships to optimize the impact of the initiative’s work within HBS, at Harvard University, and externally.

•Participate in the design of and support faculty-led efforts to enhance research, course development, teaching activities, seminars, and conferences, including the identification of case research sites, field-based project opportunities, and partners.

Work with faculty to design and execute targeted practitioner engagements aligned with BEI priorities.

•Develop and oversee a communications and digital marketing strategy to showcase the work of BEI through multiple media to elevate BEI’s external presence among thought leaders and key influencers through the dissemination of research, information about related activities, and the work of students and alumni in the field.  nn nn
•Work closely with select MBA student activities including coordination with MBA admissions and career and professional development and interact with student club leaders to leverage existing opportunities, advance field-based engagements, and raise awareness.

•Collaborate with HBS External and Alumni Relations to develop and expand alumni engagement efforts related to business and environment.

•Collaborate with Harvard Business Publishing to enhance the School’s role as a leading provider of teaching materials to instructors seeking to integrate climate change into MBA and Executive Education courses.

•Develop opportunities for Executive Education on business and environment topics.

•Oversee the internal operations of the Initiative including budget, staffing, and resource management.

nn nnBasic Qualificationsnn nn Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years relevant general management experience is required.  nn nnAdditional Qualifications and Skillsnn nn The ideal candidate will have a passion for and demonstrated knowledge of environmental sustainability.

Evidence of excellence in a mission-driven, environmentally-focused setting and of accomplishment within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.nS/he will have a proven record of excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Familiarity with MBA constituents and the management and operation of academic programs within a research environment a plus.

The candidate must be self-motivated and creative, as well as adept at managing up, building collaborative relationships throughout the organization, and driving multi-stakeholder processes forward amidst competing priorities.

Ability to perform all levels of work from strategy to directly managing events.

Demonstrated experience in managing and motivating a team.
